Donor Hero

A game to talk about
organ donation
with 8–13 year-olds

How do you talk about organ donation in class—without making it dramatic but without sugar-coating it either?
The Federal Public Service of Health gave us this challenge: create a web app to start the conversation at school and continue it at home with family.
The goal? Helping kids better understand what organ donation really means, so they can talk about it with their loved ones.

A delicate topic…
explained with care

In Belgium, everyone is considered an organ donor by default. But in practice, it’s often the family who has to make the decision. It’s an emotionally intense moment, where every minute matters.
Better information means better conversations.

Learning through play: gamification that serves the message

To capture the attention of 8–13 year-olds, we leaned on something that already makes sense to them: play.
With gamification and familiar game mechanics (levels, rewards, avatars…), we turn a sensitive topic into a fun, meaningful experience. It makes the message more accessible, lively and much easier to remember. Because we learn better when we play—especially when we can identify with our own hero.

Becoming a real (donor) hero

Kids create their own superhero.

The hero then goes through different levels filled with mini-games, each exploring a facet of organ donation.
With every victory, a new organ is collected. They need six: the transplantable ones.

But the real challenge comes at the end: the player has to make a personal decision: become a Donor Hero, or not.

And to go even further, players can discover
inspiring testimonials from recipients and donor families.

The cherry on top: a personalized video of their superhero, ready to share with friends.
